Description

The unit includes all of the experimental parts of the 1st year course, including: - Introductory laboratory activities covering working in a lab environment, safety and data handling. - Laboratory Skills (FA) and Engineering Applications (FB) The students will answer some pre-lab questions on-line and receive feedback on their answers. Then in in small groups, they will complete various laboratory practical tasks and gain experience in basic laboratory procedures. Post-lab activities will include further on-line questions with feedback. - Laboratory Experiments (F1-F5) The students will answer some pre- lab questions on-line and receive feedback on their answers. Then in small groups, they will complete various laboratory practical tasks and gain experience in basic laboratory procedures. Post- lab activities will include completing a different sections of a formal laboratory report for the first four experiments. For the final experiment they will write a complete report on their experiment. The report sections and the complete report will be submitted on-line and marks and written feedback will be provided. - Poster presentation, oral presentation, IT skills and ethics discussion Students will present a poster in the first semester and an oral presentation in the second semester based on one of their lab experiments or engineering in society. These will be organised and marked through the personal tutorial system. In addition tutoring on basic skills in Word and Excel and a written discussion on ethics in a chemical engineering context will be submitted.
